Being a military or law enforcement officer, your job puts you in harm’s way. Therefore, it is crucial to wear protective equipment that can protect you while you perform your duties. One of the most vital protective gear is a concealed bulletproof vest. Concealed bulletproof vests are designed to protect your vital organs from fatal gunshots. In this blog, we will discuss the protection levels of bulletproof vests, what they mean, and what you should think about while selecting one.
Level I: Level I vests are the lowest level of protection. They can protect against 9mm full metal jacket bullets and .40 Smith and Wesson bullets with a speed of 350m/s. These vests are most preferred for personal protection and are not recommended for tactical or law enforcement use.
Level IIA: Level IIA vests are also for personal use and are most popular among lawmakers, security guards, and civilians who fear personal attacks. Level IIA vests offer protection against 9mm and .40 S&W rounds with a higher speed limit of 373m/s.
Level IIIA: Level IIIA vests are the most commonly used bulletproof vests. They offer adequate protection against most handgun bullets, including 9mm and .44 magnum rounds. They are also effective against shotgun pellets.
Level III: Level III is the minimum requirement for most tactical and military applications. The vest is capable of withstanding 7.62 NATO FMJ rounds, but the users may feel the impact. These vests are bulkier and are unsuitable for everyday use.
Level IV: Level IV vests provide the highest level of protection. They can withstand high-powered rifle ammunition, including M193 and M855. They are suitable for military operations, SWAT missions, and other high-risk missions.
Concealed bulletproof vests are vital protection gears because of the spate of gun violence in society. Hence, security personnel, law enforcement agencies, and military personnel must understand the level of protection that these vests offer. While selecting a concealed bulletproof vest, consider the type of missions you will undertake, the risks, and the ammunition you are likely to encounter. An inadequate vest or under-rated protection level could prove fatal when it matters most. Invest in the right equipment, and be prepared for any scenario.
