Have you ever wondered if Ballistic shields and Tactical shields mean the same thing? Since they really do sound alike. You can do well to read on, and you will find out if they do not only sound alike but also have a similar meaning.
Ballistic shields are devices used for protection utilized by police and military personnel that are designed to stop bullets and other projectiles fired at their user. Ballistic shields also protect from less serious threats such as thrown materials. Ballistic shields are used in situations where riot shields would not be very effective.
Ballistic shields are also called tactical shields. They can be made from materials such as UHMWPE or prepreg aramid fibers. Some of their features can include clear armored viewing ports, ambidextrous handles, and spotlights for use at night. Tactical shields may be handheld or mounted on frames with wheels. Some tactical or ballistic shields are designed to protect only the upper torso, and some are designed to protect the whole body. As opposed to a ballistic vest, projectiles stopped by a tactical shield will not transfer trauma to the user, as they do not have direct contact with their body.
Tactical Shields can sometimes be small enough to be carried by a single person. It may also be carried in police cars in the United States as standard equipment. Shields are used either in accordance with policy or in response to individual circumstances. Many police organizations permit the use of shields only in defensive situations, such as establishing a perimeter and waiting for reinforcements, while others permit them to be used in offensive situations, such as stopping high-risk vehicles or approaching dangerous suspects. Tactical shields should have a carrying system that allows them to hold the shield for long periods of time without becoming fatigued. The carrier should also be able to reload a handgun while holding a ballistic shield.
